This morning I noticed something. I noticed that there appears to be more utilitarianism on the web. I noticed that Wordpress now quantifies follower growth, engagement and more and whilst some people love it, it fills me with dread....

Creeping Utilitarianism on the Fediverse — May 5, 2026 -
A Simpler Wordpress Federation Process — Mar 27, 2026Yesterday I spent some time looking into why my WordPress blog was de-federated. My suspicion is that when I switched from FTP to rsync, to upload the latest changes, it modified the .htaaccess file or the .well-known/webfinger file. That’s why my blog stopped posting to the Fediverse.... -
The Reddit Emigration — Jun 13, 2023I know of Reddit and I have an account that I use every so often. I have never felt the need for a site like Digg or Reddit, because I don’t feel the need to look at what people are sharing and reading, and promoting or demoting. For a long time it felt like a website that had users, but had not updated it’s UI for years.... -
The Diversification Of The Social Media and Microblogging Environment — Jun 5, 2023When Elon Musk bought Twitter he signed the start of the Social Media giant’s implosion. A decade earlier Murdoch had done the same thing to MySpace. In the end he sold MySpace for a fraction of what he had bought it for.... -
Podcasts and Social Media — Jun 19, 2023When you listen to podcasts, and you read articles, and you visit websites you always see Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and Instagram, to name the giants. In every podcast episode you hear the guests say “You can find me under this name on this network, and the same name on that network.”... -
Mastodon has Eight Million Accounts Today — Dec 3, 2022Mastodon has reached eight million accounts today. That’s close to the population of Switzerland and two million less than London. Mastodon is growing because it was ready to scale up at the right time. As Musk and Twitter shift towards the Right, and as Musk perpetuates conspiracy theories, on a daily basis, so he prepares the idea conditions for other social networks and opportunities to thrive.... -
Using WordPress as a Fediverse Instance — Jul 6, 2023Over a period of a few days I have turned my WordPress blog into a fediverse instance. The process took some trial and error. In the end it was quit easy and there are three steps.... -
Application Programming Interfaces, Really Simple Syndication and the Open Protocols — Jun 3, 2023Twitter and Reddit want to charge people to use their API despite already wanting people to pay them directly. Twitter decided to drive users away and make itself more expensive. As a result of this the website is imploding, rather than thriving.... -
The First Fediverse Post from This Fediverse Instance — Mar 19, 2026This is the first fediverse post from this static site. This is a test to see if it is visible.... -
On Teens and the Fediverse Opportunity — Dec 5, 2025In Australia, and England, and Ireland, and Switzerland there are talks, in some cases that are being implemented that seak to block children and teens from using the Social Media Giants.... -
Enjoying the Fediverse — Jan 28, 2025At the moment I feel myself drifting away from Facebook because although I like seeing the hikes that people share and the potential groups I could join I do not like the leadership of that site. I also muted the two whatsapp groups that I follow from GoSocial because I want to go back to not using Whatsapp again, because it also belongs to Facebook. Finally although I liked the Threads community I feel myself drifting from that too, because I’m tired of seeing so much junk in my timeline. And now we get to the positive.... -
Conversing to the Fediverse With WordPress — Jan 26, 2025Recently I saw a post stating that Wordpress can speak with the fediverse more effectively. For months we could post to the fediverse but if we replied to a toot via WordPress it would be lost. Those on Mastodon instances would comment but be “ignored”.... -
Threads Thoughts — Sep 24, 2024For several days I have replaced Facebook with Threads and the experience has been good. I have found that the community, so far, is ordinary, rather than geeky, and friendly rather than trolling or flamey.... -
The Fediverse is Dead to Me — Jun 3, 2024Yesterday I defederated my blog from the fediverse, and I removed the plugin from my blog this morning. I will probably never return to the Fediverse, whether Mastodon or other, for the forseeable future.... -
Dormant Social Media Life While Sorting Through Drives — Feb 2, 2024Recently my Social Media Life has become dormant. I do visit Facebook every so often but I ignore Instagram, barely touch Mastodon or the fediverse, and in general have stopped looking at social media for a social life. It’s not that my life offline has become vibrant. It’s that online is empty of meaningful engagement, especially in winter.... -
The Absurdity of Social Media and the Fediverse — Nov 6, 2023It’s Ten Fourty Eight on a Monday and i have barely touched social media. I have barely touched social media for two reasons. People don’t see it as socialising anymore. They take a utilitarian approach to social media, which makes it absurd. The second reason is that we see how ignorant the world is about current affairs.... -
Post On Your Own Site and Syndicate Everywhere Applied — Oct 24, 2023Until the pandemic I used Facebook (FB), Twitter(TW) and Instagram(IG) daily. As pandemic solitude took its toll on me I dumped Facebook, and then I dumped Instagram. I started blogging again, and I continued to use Twitter for another two years, before finally dumping Twitter too.... -
On Not Contributing Money to Fediverse Instances — Oct 9, 2023Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Fediverse instances want you to pay them to use their services. This could be fantastic. It isn’t, for one simple reason. We are helping someone else grow their projects enough for them, eventually to get IPOs and sell off the company, and our contribution to the highest bidder for them to profit....

Threads and the Fediverse — Aug 11, 2023A few weeks ago I was completely opposed to Threads being connected and accepted by the Fediverse because I hated the idea of 100 million users flooding a social network with 10 million users. Now that threads has imploded I feel differently.... -
The Post Social Media Age — Aug 4, 2023Someone asked Is decentralization the future of social media? and I’d take an extra leap. I believe that the Fediverse, made possible by ActivityPub, and the other one, made possible by the Authenticated Transfer Protocol both point to a different future... -
ClassicPress and the Fediverse part deux — Aug 1, 2023After my first post about playing with ClassicPress and the Fediverse it was suggested that I try the nightly build of ClassicPress so I did. The result can be seen here.... -
ClassicPress and the Fediverse - Not Quite Ready — Jul 30, 2023Yesterday I experimented with migrating my blog from WordPress to ClassicPress to see whether ClassicPress plays nicely with the fediverse. It does but there is room for improvement.... -
Mainstream Fediverse — Jul 27, 2023I started writing a post, but felt that it was too negative so I stopped, and now I’m writing this one. I want to explore the way in which Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter and Reddit are still front and foremost on The Guardian Website, as well as many others.... -
Twitter X-Roads - Twitter Crossroad — Jul 25, 2023With the change in name from Twitter to X, and with the destruction of a recognisable brand mentioned in tens of thousands of podcasts, podcasts, episodes and millions of web pages I was curious to see how Twitter was, with the new logo. It took more than 24 hours to change the favicon, and whilst x.com does redirect to Twitter, it does not do anything else than redirect to Twitter.com. You can’t see your x posts there.... -
X-Istential - Podcasts and Where We Find People — Jul 24, 2023Yesterday Twitter decided to re-brand as X. X.com redirects to Twitter.com. Within the next few days, weeks, months twitter will change its name and brand, and the URLs will be wrong. All twitter links, all embedded tweets, everything will become dead links. When we look for something on Twitter, we will be redirected to X.... -
A Little Too Experimental — Jul 9, 2023The Fediverse is great because people are experimenting and trying new idea. It’s also great because we can be there through every step of the process. This is also why things could be better....
