If you drive in Geneva there are hundreds of vineyards. If you drive from Luins all the way to Leukerbad you have vineyards. In effect Switzerland has a landscape filled with winemaking vineyards....

The Lure of Affordable Cycling — Apr 18, 2026A few days ago I noticed that the car said I had 1300km before the next service. Within a few days it said 0km until next service. Now the “service” light is on permanently. I went to the garage to book a service and I was told that the service would be from 1700-2000 CHF because it is the 10 year service.... -
On Investing Time Writing a Daily Blog Post daily — Apr 17, 2026For years, spending time on social media was an investment that paid dividends. One of my UN jobs was connected directly with responding to a tweet about them looking for an archivisit. Within a day I had an interview and within a few days I was working. That was back in 2014 or so, when social media was more convivial.... -
The Curious Case of the Tired Elliptical Wheel — Apr 16, 2026At the end of last summer I noticed that my bike felt more sluggish, especially when I was tired, but also when I was riding alone, against my own desire for speed. I linked it to changing from Continental GP 5000 to Continental GP 4 Seasons, as well as cooler winter riding, conditions, long leg, and long sleeve layers and riding with an easy group too many times.... -
The Morning Run to Breakfast With Cyclists — Apr 15, 2026Yesterday I dropped off my bike for a service. I noticed that the rear wheel no longer seemed to be true so I took it to a bike shop. They confirmed that some of the bike spokes were about to fail. Due to this technical issue I left my bike with them for maintenance. Now I find myself without a bike.... -
The Diminished Need for a Car — Apr 14, 2026Last Sunday I cycled betwen Nyon and Geneva, not once but twice. I cycled from Nyon to Geneva, passing close to my old school, before getting into Geneva. Once in Geneva I joined a group ride and we cycled from Geneva towards Divonne along a similar route to the one I had taken. We then stopped for coffee, and a pain au chocolat in my case, before riding back to Geneva, via the top, this time. Once this was done I cycled back towards Nyon along the lake until Mies, before climbing towards Coppet, and then heading back to the lake and Nyon. I then chased cars and managed to keep up, despite 100kms in my legs.... -
A Fitness Discussion with MyAI about Silos, Running, Cycling, and Strava — Apr 13, 2026Years ago we had bulky GPS watches that we wore only when we were hiking or doing sports. They only tracked our speed, location, and elevation. With time they were made less hideous and more socially acceptable. We could go from wearing them when doing sports, to when doing nothing.... -
The First Metric Century of the Season — Apr 12, 2026Yesterday I set off from home at around 08:00 for what I planned would be a one hundred kilometre ride. The rational was that I would cycle to and from Geneva, around 50 kilometres, and participate in a group ride with Bike Club Switzerland, another fifty kilometre ride. It’s because it was easy to add a few kilometres that I decided to bring this first one hundred kilometre ride to fruition.... -
On High Winds, Cold Temperatures and the Need for Relaxed Group Rides — Apr 10, 2026More than two weeks ago I could hear the slats dancing. The wind was strong, so it made the slats for the shutters dance. I could also see tree branches dance with the wind. I could also hear the wind load the roof and make it creak. These sights and sounds made me question the rationality of going for a group ride that Sunday, and whether I would be able to do the group run on Monday.... -
Playing With Our Sports Data With Eleventy and Strava — Apr 9, 2026This month Apple wants me to walk ten point three kilometres with the Apple Watch 10 times. Garmin and Strava want me to cycle 8000m uphill, 800km horizontally, and more. Apple, Garmin and one or two other companies want me to walk 300,000 steps per month....
